A regular cleaning (called a prophylaxis) removes plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth and just below the gumline. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) goes further below the gumline to treat the pockets that form when gum disease is present. Your hygienist will always let you know if they see signs that a deep cleaning would benefit you before any work is done.
